I am not sure how many ppl are still glued to IPL (I know my dad is) but I know v few ppl who don't agree that it is not a good thing. I have a thing or two to say that are not in anyway related to cricket. But then most ppl seem to also feel that IPL is no longer about cricket.
I do think that Shashi Tharoor has been made into a scapegoat - not that I feel sorry for him. But if Dayanidhi Maran being Communications Minister was not a conflict of interest then I am not sure what grave error Tharoor must have committed. I refuse to believe that Sunanda Pushkar is clean and ethical as well but her treatment in media definitely rattles the feminist in me. But beyond these small sacrifices and the big one that we are all waiting for with bated breath my only interest in the whole episode is the ppl's responses.
In the neoliberal economics of the world, Indians still find it difficult to digest the blatant spectacle of greed and avarice. Hypocrites though we are, this shows that we are not ready as yet to go too far. If we learn to ignore the starvation of farmers and artisans, we also cringe at what's being offered at the other end of the spectrum - where an elite circle of business persons and Bollywood actors quote sums of money obscene even by 21st century standards. A world where Karan Johar's movies seem like model images of restrain and austerity.
Moving past the glitz and the novelty, we are not ready of the big dream yet - of base and aggressive greed.
